IBS Colloquium "Taal Tori: Kultura den Boka"
Language is more than words alone
Why is exercising in Suriname less good for you than in the Netherlands? Are you still allowed to say the word ‘housework’ in the new nation of Curaçao? Why do emigrants returning to Suriname cause a pain in the ear? Why is it that in the Antilles the language of education is Papiamento while in Suriname it’s Dutch? What factors affected this choice? Does it mean that Sranan Tongo language is destined to suffer the same fate as Akurio?
Language is subject to constant change. It reflects what’s happening inside and outside the community using it. The IBS symposium will discuss language-related issues such as these and examine the link between language and culture in our times.
In six lectures supplemented with performances, linguistic and cultural scientists will explore various aspects of language from their own perspective. And of course the main focus will be on the languages of Suriname and the former Antilles.
