An evening with Stepanida Borissova (Russian Republic of Sakha) and Wang Li (China)

This Wild Wild East evening focuses on shamanism. Stepanida Borisova is a singer from Sakha, in the far north-east of Siberia, who has an amazing voice and performs a repertoire of various traditional singing styles. She is especially famous for her tojuks, epic songs involving improvisation, and for her work in international projects. Some people claim she is a healer and that her shamanistic singing style has cured people of their ills.
The mouth harp is an important instrument in shamanic rituals. Wang Li hails from north-eastern China, where this instrument was used extensively in shamanistic music until the revolution. He is a virtuoso on the mouth harp and manages to induce a trance in his listeners.

This performance is part of the Wild Wild East Festival.
