Trance-inducing overtone singing from Tuva
Those in the audience who have never heard overtone singing (also known as throat-singing) will find themselves in a completely different musical universe. The vocalists produce multiple tones with their voices by manipulating their lips, tongue and larynx. Tuva, wedged between Siberia and Mongolia, is one of the few regions where this difficult technique is practised. The masters of this technique making up Huun-Huur-Tu also accompany themselves on traditional instruments. The band is now world famous and has worked with many different artists, ranging from Frank Zappa to the Moscow Art Trio. The galloping horses and the enormous flocks of sheep on the endless Tuvan plains, with swarms of birds overhead, are never far away in the music of Huun-Huur-Tu.
This performance is part of the Voices Weekend event.
